Well, Dubai was amazing.
More than I expected for sure.
I was out there for my 25th wedding anniversary and it turned out to be one of the best trips of our lives.
That’s me in the desert just before sunset.
We were on a SUV desert safari that went “off roading” over the sand dunes.
I had no idea that this meant literally jumping off sand dunes at max speed…it was incredible and slightly terrifying, not gonna lie!! LOL!
We also rode camels, raced some falcons, enjoyed an evening BBQ out in the desert…just incredible stuff.
Felt like another world.
And it gave us some perspective on a few things…
First, Canada.
It’s clear that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is benefiting from their oil riches. There’s no doubt.
But to see the vision that the President of UAE has turned into reality is impressive.
There is capital flowing into that country by the truckload. It’s obvious.
We stopped counting at 250 construction projects and 400+ cranes in the sky.
They have taken a desert and created a thriving city with hotels, shopping, beaches, restaurants, and tons of tourists.
The Mall of Dubai was the most visited place on planet earth in 2023.
Insane.
The crime rate is low, taxes are almost non-existent, and the potential to grow more feels unlimited.
I was speaking to one of the locals and he articulated that he was super proud to be living in Dubai and that the UAE as a whole was benefiting from 3 things:
One of our tour guides went on to emphasize how important a good leader was.
He shared that Venezuela also had tons of oil riches, the most in the world, but had horrible leadership and the country reflected that.
Just having the riches wasn’t enough apparently.
He then went on to share that the UAE was only 6th or 7th globally in oil reserves and that Canada had much more…and that in fact, Canada was 4th globally in oil reserves.
In that instant I reflected back on Canada, with all its beautiful lakes, rivers, forests, minerals, energy reserves, and potential…and it became abundantly obvious that we’re spoiled with a wonderful country…that has had very poor leadership for much too long.
How could a city literally emerge out of the desert with such a vibrant feel to it and Canada struggle to get a single extra MRI machine in the Orangeville or Collingwood hospital?
We have very clearly been resting on our abundances here for a tad too long.
Next, this trip made me reflect on our own unique lives.
Do you have a clear vision for your life?
Do you know where you want to go?
And do you have a personal judicial system setup to keep you honest?
Or are you lying to yourself?
Who is keeping you honest?
It’s clear that having a set of rules, or principles, to live by are a key ingredient in building something great. What are yours?
Lastly, this trip made me evaluate the importance of education.
In times like now, it’s more important than ever to have an “information advantage” over the external world.
To have a good grasp of real estate.
To understand what moves the economy and interest rates.
To feel confident in where to save and how to build personal financial freedom.
It’s why we believe studying these things has given us a competitive advantage for our own lives.

Dubai reminded me of the keys to our own personal success.
