The Perfect Steak & a Broken Economy: Two Unbelievable Tales

Message from Tom and Nick

See that pic above?

That's me, Anthony, and Nigel from the Rock Star team all huddled around my laptop watching a video of a chef explaining how she uses a "cold sear" pan technique for the perfect steak.

When I first saw it I was mesmerized.

How can this be possible?

How can you make a great steak on a pan and cold sear it?

When using a pan I was always taught you have to melt butter and garlic and thyme and baste the steak in the pan as you cook and sear it.

It's a complete mess to clean up.

So when she demonstrated a cold sear with no butter, no basting, no oil, no mess I was mystified.

And you start the process with a cold pan...you just drop the steak right on the pan and begin?!

And this somehow makes a great steak? An amazing one, even?

No way.

I think I lost sleep thinking about this for two days.

And then I broke down and tried it. I had to know if this was correct.

And wouldn't you know it...it worked. The cold sear on a pan makes an AMAZING steak. Like much, much better than anything you're going to get at 98% of steak houses, even.

You need a 1.5" good quality steak but jeez, it's a game changer for a quick steak.

I actually melt butter and toss in garlic and thyme together in a separate pan, with no mess, and baste the steak with that as it rests for about 5-10min.

Pure magic.

I was sharing this new found information with Anthony and Nigel and they were also in disbelief.

So that's us huddled up around the video watching this chef in action (the link is below for you if you too need to see this, LOL!).

OK, on to much more serious matters...

(can there be more serious matters than cooking the perfect steak though?? Hmmm).

Here's what's catching our eye this week.

So Canada has the world's 3rd largest oil reserves.

It's first in fresh water out of any country in the world.

Canada is 5th in global gold reserves (in the ground!).

And it has the second most forests.

The country should be rich.

Like super, super rich.

Unfortunately, it's not. Poor management, lack of vision, excessive regulation, and too many taxes prevent entrepreneurs from developing the country into what it could be.

For years, national policies have driven the masses to hide their savings in real estate at the expense of allocating capital to productive use cases.

And here's where this situation has left us to date...

Richard Dias, IceCap economic analyst, charted out gold, silver, and Bitcoin in Canadian dollars and it's becoming quite obvious that all of the money printing is driving up the fiat dollar prices of good hard assets.

Or said differently, the Canadian dollar is losing value and it's taking more and more of them to buy things that are scarce.

Things like gold, silver, and Bitcoin.

This excessive currency debasement doesn't allow for capital formation and therefore prevents any new investment into capital intensive businesses around energy, forestry, water or mining.

Don't believe me?

Check out this next chart:

Would you just look at that?

No one in Canada is investing in the country.

No one.

Why would you? Capital flees to where it is most welcome and it is not welcome in Canada.

What the country is left with is a GDP per capita that looks like this:

Flat for years.

The sad part of all of this is these problems are happening right across the Western world right now.

And the second order effects of massive money printing of finance indebted nations has been this:

The bottom 50% of households account for only 2.5% of wealth.

Read that again!

And yes, that's U.S. data but the same trend applies here to Canada.

Wealth is accruing to asset owners...rapidly.

90% of the population accounts for only about 40% of the wealth.

No wonder there are social tensions at all levels and politics is getting nastier and nastier.

The wealth gap is exploding.

(Quick Aside: If you want to buy gold there's a great place in Canada called Canada PMX, CanadianPMX.com, you don't have to simply buy a weird ETF where you never actually custody the gold. And if it's finally time to buy and custody some beautiful Bitcoin then our favourite place is Bull Bitcoin. And if you sign up via RockStarBTC.ca you'll get preferred rates on transactions...thanks, Bull Bitcoin!)

And why do we keep mentioning things like hard assets?

Because the smart money (aka, capital) flees jurisdictions where it is not welcome. You too can flee the old system by owning assets that are out of that system.

Gold, silver, and Bitcoin fit the bill, in our humble opinion.

The government cannot "debase" hard, sound money.

All of this weird economic action creates wild boom and bust cycles.

This week, we sat down with one of the largest capital allocators to the Canadian real estate market, Peter Politis, CEO of Greybrook Realty Partners.

They have done billions, yes billions, in development projects across the country and the USA.

So when Peter talks it's all signal.

He isn't discussing theory, he's talking from actual information on the streets.

And you may be surprised to hear what he thinks is in store for Canadian real estate, rents, and single family homes.
