My journey into real estate investing started when my parents and one of my roommate’s parents jointly purchased our student house in London near Western University.
My dad offered for me to buy into the house for a nominal amount of about 1 summer job’s pay… however unfortunately my priorities were more focused on typical University student activities at the time and I (regrettably!!) passed on the opportunity.
With both sets of parents being new to Real Estate Investing themselves, I assumed the role of “in-house landlord” and was responsible for collecting rent cheques and general upkeep of the property.
With my name on title, I had access to the bank accounts and mortgage statements and although I didn’t fully catch the RE bug at that time, my eyes started to open to the power of having “other people’s money” pay for an asset you own.
Fast forward a few years, my parents had sold the student rental and we were reminded of how powerful owning that asset was for my family.
I knew I wanted to get into the Real Estate Market and I purchased a Duplex in Waterloo, with the goal of living in 1 unit and having a mortgage helper from the other.
On a trip to Mexico with friends, I read Rich Dad Poor Dad for the first time and our minds were spinning with new ideas and goals for our future.
This is when I truly began diving into our journey of Financial Education and at the same time also discovered the Your Life! Your Terms! Show podcast.
I quickly became one of their biggest believers and rapidly expanded my network and knowledge base by joining the regular membership and VIP group as soon as a spot became available.
I dove down the “Rock Star University” rabbit holes of Personal Development, Skill Building (Sales & Marketing), Real Estate, Bitcoin, Building a Side Hustle, and more - reading all kinds of books and listening to every YLYT podcast to date!
This led to a few different sales roles for myself and I learned a ton from those experiences. Over the past 3 years, I have cycled through moving into the lower level of our Waterloo house, completing renovations in both units to increase the value, and in between I moved to Toronto for a year to pursue career opportunities.
I’ve been able to access equity from our Waterloo house to purchase a single-family home back in London, as well as a single-family home in Sarnia. I also Joint Ventured with my sisters on a 4th property along the way. The plan with all of those places is to add a second unit in the near future and extract equity to continue growing my RE portfolio.
I can’t thank the Rock Star Team and network of others on the YLYT journey enough for their guidance and support along the way. It’s been incredibly uplifting to know there is a group of others thinking similarly, with big goals and taking action towards them!
